Mobile Shelving System Video

Visually how mobile racking system can save up til 50% of storage space.

Additional ans to add on to previous ans for facilitator's question

  1. Mobile racks which give maximum utilisation of the warehouse space whilst allowing 100% access to the pallets.
  2. The superstructure is fixed onto electrically powered mobile bases, which move on rails embedded in the floor.
  3. The system allows the operator to open the aisle required with a single command.
  4. This solution allows usage of up to 95% of the warehouse space and is increasingly relevant in the drive for lower warehouse cost.
  5. Can be used to store many types of palletized unit loads – boxes, drums, sacks etc.
  6. You reduce the costs for new buildings and utilise existing storage space much better, or both.
  7. Reduction of energy cost for heating cooling lightening.
  8. Cleaning and operating cost reduced in storage area due to smaller total area.

Additional ans to add on to previous ans for facilitator's question

Firstly, mobile racking is very expensive compared with other systems, it is particularly suitable for cold stores where the space utilization is the most important factor. Secondly, mobile racking is preferred when the rental of the warehouse is high, because mobile racking is particularly efficient in terms of maximizing available storage space. Since the storage space are getting more and more expensive, optimum space utilization has become a necessity. Approximately 7.5m of space is required for each pallet in a narrow aisle racking system, and drive-in racking uses around 6.6m per pallet. Comparing to the two storage systems, powered mobile racking on the other hand, only uses 4.6m per pallet. The installation of a powered mobile pallet racking system into an existing warehouse has the potential to eliminate the need to expand it, or move to larger premises. Thirdly, mobile racking is a better choice when the quality of the product is essential such as food products. Each pallet is individually supported in the mobile racking, so the quality of the storage is excellent. However, drive in racks and block stacking storage system may cause damage to stock. Fourthly, mobile racking can be used when the company does not want to replace the fork lift trucks or invest in expensive to maintain technology. This is because there is no need for special handling equipment, as a conventional fork lift truck can be used with mobile racking. In contrast, both narrow aisle racks and double deep racks require special trucks. Another factor leads to using mobile racking system instead of other storage system is that the stock movement is not very fast, which means the number of line items is high but frequency of accessions per line is low. Last but not least, mobile racking is chose when access to individual pallets is required. Mobile racking system works by moving the position of a single aisle within a solid block of racking. This exposes the required rack face and allows access to individual pallets. Whereas, drive in racks, block stacking, and double deep racks have poor stock access problems.

Facilicator's Question

Under what circumstances mobile racking (as shown in your Blog) becomes a preferred choice instead of other storage systems? Explain.

Mobile racking is usually planned during the planning stage before building and is used extensively in cold storage applications (both refrigeration and freezer types). Specially constructed floors with running and guide rails are required for the building of these racks. These rack works by reducing the number of aisles and increasing warehouse capacity without losing direct access to each pallets. The space saving can be so dramatic that economies are also seen in lighting, heating or cooling and ventilating costs.

Rack movement can be directed manually from a push-button control panel or forklift-mounted transmitter or automatically through a computerized processor that can be programmed to integrate with the warehouse management system. Its unique locking feature means that contents can be secured and access can be restricted.

Almost any type of racking can be used with mobile bases. It also can be used to store many types of palletized unit loads – boxes, drums, sacks etc. Alternatively rack beams can be decked out to form shelving for high density “archive” storage. It's probably to go with lower-throughput SKUs.

LINPAC delivers fine quality storage solution for Direct Wines

This is a case of storage of how this company makes proper and effective storage system for special products, WINES. As we have learnt, WINES are more fragile and need special storage temperature to maintain the freshness of the wine. the bold sentances are the main points regarding how they store and pick the wines.

LINPAC delivers fine quality storage solution for Direct WinesLINPAC Storage Systems has installed a bespoke storage solution into the new, Gloucester based, UK distribution centre for Direct Wines.

The solution consists of a combination of very narrow aisle racking for bulk stock and specially designed shelving for the picking areas.

The distribution centre has been developed to cope with a throughput of over 50 million bottles a year.Melvyn Brown, general manager for Direct Wines, selected LINPAC Storage Systems to manufacture and install the solution at Gloucester as he had already worked with the company on a previous contract - the Direct Wines warehouse in Theale.

"LINPAC met all of our specifications and we presented them with some very precise storage issues to address," says Brown, "particularly with regard to the way bottles are presented to pickers. Theale proved to be a very good test bed and LINPAC demonstrated that they could modify their standard carton live product with upward sloping trays at the pick face specifically designed for us."

Direct Wines required another distribution centre because they had outgrown the Theale warehouse which is attached to their head office. The company had spent time outsourcing a large part of its operation, but has now brought the complete storage and distribution operation in house using both the original warehouse and the new distribution centre in Gloucester Business Park.At 180,000 sq ft, the Gloucester facility is larger and more modern than the Theale warehouse.

It has been specifically designed by Direct Wines in conjunction with their consultant, The Logistics Business, for maximum productivity to support a high level of consumer service.

Inside the warehouse the very narrow aisle racking has a bulk stockholding of 18,000 pallets of wine which is destined, almost exclusively, for the UK market.

Pick and deposit stations facilitate the safe handling of loads into and out of the racking and there is a special racking section for packaging which is stored on mesh decks at one end of the warehouse.

There are several areas of the distribution centre dedicated to picking - pick to light, pick to voice and two step picking.

In the pick to light area, LINPAC has installed pallet racking with carton live beds.

Longspan shelving is used in the pick to voice area with tilted mesh decks for the speciality wines and carton live beds with upward sloping picking trays for the more popular brands.

At the pick face these special trays present the opened cases of bottles to the picker at an ideal angle. The upward slope of the tray also acts as a brake on the cases of wines stored on the carton live preventing them from rolling down and knocking into the case which is being picked from.I

n the two step picking area, wines are picked from carton live on the top level whilst the bottom section is fitted out with galvatite decked reverse slope chutes. These chutes are used to remove the empty cardboard wine cases. The cases of wine are transported around the distribution centre on an automated case conveyor system - this system is also supported by LINPAC's racking.Direct Wines, the world's leading independent retailer of home delivered wines, is better known to many by one of its trading identities such as Laithwaites, The Sunday Times Wine Club or The Barclaycard Wine Service.

Started in 1969, the company is still privately owned by Tony and Barbara Laithwaite, its turnover is now in excess of £250m.Based in Milton Keynes, LINPAC Storage Systems is one of the leading British manufacturers of quality storage solutions. The company is part of the world renowned LINPAC Group of companies - the UK leader in storage and materials handling.

Mobile Shelving Storage Systems

Mobile shelving and mobile storage systems can more than double the storage capacity of conventional static shelving or simply free up valuable floor space.

Mobile storage is recommended for:

- Document storage Medical records
- Library storage
- Archive filing
- Retail stock storage
- Magnetic tape storage
- Security vaults
- Parts storage

By installing an equivalent mobile version of existing storage, it is possible to store 20% more, in 18% less floor space!
By converting the entire original storage area to mobile systems, it is possible to store 90% more in the same space.

Cantilever Racking Storage Systems

Cantilever Racking provides bespoke storage for materials of all shapes and sizes in both static and dynamic applications. It is particularly suitable for the storage of long, bulky and irregular-shaped items that can’t be palletised. It can be used with all designs and makes of fork lift trucks and handling equipment.

Long Arm / narrow bay cantilever racking for very heavy items

Cantilever racking can provide secure storage for virtually any items that are generally stored in long lengths. We are limited by the available space – not by the racking. This makes it ideal for storing items including pipes, bars, tubes and cylinders.

Cantilever racking is ideal for storing bulky items which don’t lend themselves to being accommodated in ‘standard racking’ Bulk timber, plasterboard sheets, over-sized paper panels and flat-pack furniture are just a few examples of products that can be stored efficiently and securely.

Cantilever racking is easily adjustable – arms can be designed for adjustability on a 100mm or 150mm pitch and certain designs offer infinite adjustability so space can be maximised if the possibility of revised goods need storing.

Order Picking

Order picking is the most difficult and time consuming task in distribution centres:

For assembly, distribution or shipping in many industries small and medium sized items, cartons, boxes, bins, totes and containers need to be picked. Picked from bigger boxes or larger cartons they are assembled to a kit or a sub assembly or an order.
Space and time saving distribution of all kinds of goods with reliable and cost effective tools, that is the key to "State of the Art" order picking today.
Any e-commerce distributor needs to pick and collate orders for the efficient delivery of small quantities. Here, Carton Flow storage and picking systems are the right solution. Dynamic Storage Light and Medium order picking systems are used by pharmaceutical and cosmetic wholesalers and distributors, by mail order and e-commerce companies as well as book distributors.
Dynamic Storage technology saves picking time and assembles automatically large numbers of orders ready for despatch.

Designed to answer the needs of it's customers, Dynamic Storage Light and Medium picking systems minimise operators fatigue and maximise efficiency:

- Walking distances are drastically reduced
- Picking performance is immediatly increased
- Floor space is saved, as only two aisles are needed, one for picking and one for stock replenishement
- Automatic and accurate stock rotation and control on a first-in, first-out basis
- No energy consumption
- No maintenance costs
- Easy handling, as the cartons are always easily accessible at the front of the racks
- Standard pallet racking systems can be used for reserve stock

Live Racking

This consists of a number of separate conveyors on which pallet loads are placed in the order in which they arrive. Each line holds only one type of item. Stores are loaded into the racking at one end and removed from the other. The system works well where enough items suitable for such a system are held. However, the system is inflexible and occupies the same amount of space whether filled to capacity or not. Since in these systems lines tend to be the same length, economic use of them depends upon the warehouse being able to control the economic quantity so that it roughly matches the accommodation available - a most unusual state of affairs. Care must be exercised in carrying out the feasibility study which considers this type of storage to make sure that it does not become an expensive white elephant. It has the advantage that, if it is fully used, it solves the problem of stock turnover while providing a reasonable concentration of stores on the floor. The system is illustrated below.

Small Parts Storage System - Flow Rack Systems

Figure: The face of aflow rack

Flow racks, more accurately called flow shelving, utilize sloped runners, usually equipped with rollers, to take advantage of gravity in order to always have the product at the front of the shelf. Items side forward as packages in front of them are removed. The fact of the flow rack presents a large number of items to the picker in a relatively small area. These systems store and feed many different types of small parts in totes or shippng cases directly to the picking location in a first-in-first-out stock rotation, permitting a high pick rate potential. Depth can be substantial, requiring less frequent replenishment. Because restocking is usually done from the rear, product can be replenished concurrently with order picking.

Typically, an employee will walk down the length of flow rack picking items and placing them into a cart or onto a conveyor belt, or sections can be configured in a U-shape to reduce retraced steps. The number of shelves varies with the height of the cartons and the overall height of the flow rack section. Lane width is adjustable to conform with carton width.

Small Parts Storage System - Bins

Standard bins and shelves are generally fabricated of wire. Wire is less expensive than sheet matal, lighter in weight, and dust-free. Where heavier weights are imvolved, standard wire bins may be strengthened too by using solid sheet- metal supporting bin backs. The solid backs give bin rigidity, prevent small items from failing through, reduce vertigi effect, and most importantly, support the major portion of the weight of each individual shelf. Shelf load is, therefore, distributed down through the back and through both wire sides.

Figure: Twin Bin
Bin widths and depths vary, as do bin heights allowing great flexibility in carousel system design. Special configurations are quite common.

A major innovation is the twin bin which allows the operator to puck from the left and the right sides of two different bins, rather than just the front of a single bin. This doubles the volume available for picking at a single bin stop, resulting in improved throughput.

Donnegan Systems

The Montel Mobilex HD Rack System lets you make the most of one of your company's biggest investments - floor space. With racks mounted on movable carriages, the system creates access aisles - for people and for trucks-only when and where they're needed. So aisles not in immediate use aren't taking up valuable floor space that could be devoted to revenue-producing activity.
This versatile system is surprisingly nimble while carrying loads over 500,000 pounds on carriages up to 120' in length. Complete operator safety is assured with a number of standard and optional safety features.

Wide Span Shelving

Wide span shelving is designed for
storage areas in which goods are
handled manually instead of being
transported on a pallet.

The system is ideal when there are
many different products (SKUs),
when the quantities are small or
variable, and when rotation is
only partial.

The system is designed for handloading
medium to heavy loads.
It can accommodate either our
galvanized shelf panels or the
traditional particle board as the
shelving surface.

Modular Drawer Storage

Modular drawer storage consists of metal cabinets into which metal drawers are placed. Modular drawer cabinets typically stand 42 or 60 inches high and contain drawers, the width and depth of which range from 24 to 36 inches. Drawer heights range from 2 to 12 inches. Weight capacity per drawer is approximately 450 pounds. Cabinets can be stacked one on top of another for good vertical space utilization. Ladders, order picking lift trucks, or S/R machines are utilized to access the upper drawer cabinets.

An important factor is that modular drawer systems are changeable and have an inherent flexibility. As requirements change, the size and types of drawers can be changed. Most of the manufacturers provide a numbering system which indicates how many of what size drawers can be fitted into a particular module. Many of the manufacturers are now offering a variety of trays, drawers, and shelves to fit within the modules to add further versatility and to adapt to part sizes and shapes, and to allow modification for future requirements.

Modular drawer systems have several major benefits:

- Each drawer can be easily compartmentalized to maximize space utilization in the drawer.

- Reach-in space is eliminated, since the contents of a drawer are accessed by pulling the drawer out into the aisle, instead of reaching into the cabinet.

- Since total floor space required is less, travel distances are reduced between storage locations and labor productivity is increased.

- Parts cleanliness and protection against deterioration is improved, since the parts are contained within a closed cabinet.

- Cabinets can be locked to limit access, thus improving inventory security.

Modular drawer systems are being used in connection with computerized inventory control systems where location and drawer numbers are provided for increased picking productivity, tracking, or inventory maintenance.

The Poly Rack System

POLY-RACKER

The centerpiece of the Poly-Rack System is the Poly-Racker,a unique, one-piece polyethylene rack that holds two55-gallon drums securely in place. A massive 100-plus gallon containment sump ensures spill safety even in worse-case drum leaks. And the deep dispensing well easily holds 5-gallon pails while containing incidental spills and splashes in a ribbed bottom--without contaminating the sump. Dispensingwells have a scalloped edge so pails can be easily removed. Two (2) drain plugs standard. Poly-Racker can betransported by forklift as separate pieces.

POLY-STACKER
Combine a single Poly-Stacker with Poly-Racker to stack up to four drums. Add another Poly-Stacker and have a storage system that holds six drums and is rated to hold3,000 lbs. UDL.
Each Poly-Stacker holds two 55-gallon drums and be stacked with a forklift easily. Any spills from the second and third levels fall into the dispensing well for containmentand easy clean- up. Combined, Poly-Racker and Poly-Stackermake up the most efficient drum storage and dispensingsystem that you can have.

POLY-SHELF
Poly shelf not only help to prevent spills, and this way it help to save money too, it also increase safety and productivity when adding the Poly-Shelf to your Poly-Rack System. It easily attaches to a Poly-Stacker and allows simultaneousdispensing from all drums. Spills? A hole in the bottom of thePoly-Shelf drains into the dispensing well in the Poly-Racker.

Drum Storage System

Drum Storage Racks are constructed of heavy duty steel angle and engineered for orderly handling and selective storage andremoval of 30 and 55 gallon drums. Assembly is easy - simply bolt four vertical legs to individual levels, attach X-bracing toends and rack is ready to accept drums. For maximum flexibility in drum storage, racks may be ordered to permit back toback installation allowing the user to customize every system to his own requirement. By combining units, any degree ofcapacity in nearly any type of space can be obtained. Designed for convenient forklift entry front and rear; all units are 34"deep.

High-Rise Shelving

High-rise shelving consists of extended height uprights that support shelves to heights typically in the 14- to 21- foot range. Unlike mezzanine shelving, the aisles are clear of mezzanines, and upper elevations of the shelving system are accessed by use of a machine that elevates the warehouse personnel to the appropriate level. Two common machine are used to transport through the systems: order picking lift trucks and storage/retrieval (S/R) machines. Order picking lift trucks are free-path lift trucks with an operator's cab located in the front of the telescoping mast of the truck. As the forks of the truck are raised, the operator's cab raises in kind. The lift-truck operator is thus raised to the elevation required in the shelving to accomplish put/pick activities. A S/R machine is a device that rides on a rail at floor level. An operator's cab raises and lowers on a vertical mast. One of these devices, not found as frequently today, particularly in small parts systems, is the stacker crane. Basically an upside down lift truck, this machine is suspended from a crane bridge.

The high-rise configuration provides efficient vertical space utilization and increases labor productivity by increasing the speed with which warehouse personnel move within the system. Walking is replaced by riding. Additionally, the order picking lift trucks and S/R machine can be equipped with computer terminals to automatically transmit instructions to the operator.

Mezzanine Shelving

Mezzanine shelving typically consists of two elevations of shelving units bolted together vertically, with a mezzanine walkway in the aisle of the upper elevation. Personnel walk on the aisle mezzanine for access to the upper elevation. The aisle mezzanine is located approximately 84 inches above the floor and uses the shelving for support. Stairways are provided to allow access to the mezzanine level. Mezzanine shelving is generally found in configurations of two or three levels; however, they are not structurally restricted to three levels. Freestanding mezzanines are occasionally used to provide mutilevel shelving systems. The freestanding mezzanine is an unbroken floor grating that relies on a series of columns for support. This variety offers the advantage of utilizing a portion of the elevated space for purposes other than shelving storage.
